College Visits

Nothing teaches better than seeing first hand.  So, even in the midst of the COVID pandemic, The Academy organized visits to college campuses.  On these visits we tour the campus, speak to students, and meet with admissions officers (who do, be forewarned, emphasize that even 9th grade academic records are taken seriously!)

In the last three years, our students (and their families, who are welcome to tag along) visited:

  • Tuskegee University
  • Troy University
  • The University of Alabama
  • Auburn University
  • Spring Hill College (Mobile)
  • The University of South Alabama (Mobile)
  • Loyola University (New Orleans)
  • Wallas Community College Selma

When travel was simply impossible because of the pandemic, we had universities come to us.  We hosted virtual tours of:

  • Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore)
  • Colorado University (Boulder)
  • University of Miami (you guessed it, in Miami)

And our students heard first-hand about life at college from groups of visiting students from:

  • Xavier University Cincinnati
  • University of Michigan
  • University of Notre Dame
  • Nazareth College

Going to college can be daunting.  As our students progress at school, we make resources available to them, and especially to our alumni who are about to embark on the college application process, to understand both opportunities and problems on a college campus.

Beginning in September 2022, The Missions Academy will hold a monthly digital Fireside Chat with a college freshman of color to hear each month how life is going.  Our first guide to college life in the Fireside Chat series is a freshman at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York located in rural Dutchess County.

“The Academy has made an impact on my son by exposing him to things he would not have experienced.  The trips to colleges get him excited for college life and motivate him to strive to become a college student.”
